Well yet another year over and another Reunion done. From the feedback we have had so far, I definitely think that this was the best one yet. This year over 120 people turned up and we even managed to beat the opposition at the Rugby!!
The Rugby match was a huge success with many old Bredonians turning up and wanting to play despite the unfriendly winter weather. As always it was the Chairman’s XV (Old Bredonians) v Presidents (Tewkesbury Rugby Club) competing for the Brian Llewellyn Thomas Memorial Cup. Bredonians fielded a full 15 strong team made up of young and old, (and yes, Wardey is still playing), against a highly skilled Tewkesbury 3rd team. A very intense match followed with only a few minor injuries this year, a good game made even more enjoyable because the winning side was the Chairman's XV who scraped through to a 14 point victory.
Away from the Rugby, this year we had hoped to run a 5-a-side game of football as an alternative to the rugby, however I think there was some uncertainty as to whether this was going ahead amongst the members and ultimately we did not have time to organise this. Sadly we had to cancel the football. My apologies go out to the few who did make the effort to turn up in full footy gear for the match. We will try to run this event next year so if you would like to join in please keep watching the website for details.
At the last AGM, members requested that we try something a little different at this year's Reunion. So this year in an effort to broaden the appeal we ran a clay pigeon shooting competition. There was also a virtual shooting competition using a laser shot simulator. Congratulations to those who took part in the big shoot-offs at the end of the day. The clay pigeon shooting was won by Matt Cooney, whose prize was a one day shooting event at Prescott shooting grounds. The shooting simulator event was won by Angus who collected a magnum of Champagne.
As always I would like to thank those behind the scenes who helped to organise this year’s event. First a big thank you to Kevin Cromwell who helped organise Tewkesbury Rugby Club to get a team together at the last minute. I am told that Kevin even went to the extreme of asking players to come and play at the school during their "gentleman's evening" the night before, though I'm not sure if there is any truth to the rumour that bribes were used!
A big thank you to Doug Sharp for running everything at the School end, from arranging the rugby kit to the catering staff, (an especially big thank you to them) they put on a great feast for all the members, the Rugby players being very grateful to have a warm meal after the thermally challenged match. I know everyone who turned up may have seen some changes in the School and its grounds since their last visit, however seeing Doug standing in the main hall stoking the fire is one thing that can only be described as giving a sense of déjà-vu.
Another big thank you also must go to David Keyte and his staff, several of whom will remember many familiar faces from the Old Bredonians. There are several new faces among the staff some of whom took great interest in seeing our older members and comparing stories of the old days of the School.
Finally, thanks go out to David Florent of the Oxford Gun Company, and Dan Martin of Prescott Shooting for laying on the clay pigeon shoot, archery and a laser shot virtual shooting simulator for the day. A great event that we will look to repeat next year.
Obviously we could not run this event without members support. For the second year running REUNION '08 has proved a great success with many more members returning each year from all different year groups, some who attend every year and many who have not been back to the School since leaving on their Founders Day.
It is always great to see a strong turnout for the Old Bredonians day in November and we hope that this will continue as our membership continues to grow. This will give the Association the opportunity to develop and run bigger, more entertaining events throughout the year. At the AGM this year, many great ideas were put forward including go-cart racing; a family day at the school; and a "social evening out" (as Jolian put it), all arranged from the funds available through the Association. All these ideas are plausible and we look forward to hearing from you all with your suggestions for the when and where of these proposals. We are more than happy to organise another event during the year, but only if we can get the numbers to turn up and if it's within a reasonable budget.
Once again thanks to all involved in REUNION '08. We are now gearing up to prepare our new look website and start on the organising of REUNION '09 which we are looking to provisionally hold on the 29th November. Put it in your diary and we will all look forward to seeing you there again next year!

On 12 July 2008, Old Bredonian Alexander Adams (1985-1992) reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on the sixth day of a gruelling climb with a mixed group of disabled and able-bodied climbers.
He raised £8,500 for the charity Enham, based at the village of Enham Alamein near Andover, where he lives. Alexander said: "I made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro! I can't say it was a holiday, and there was a point when I nearly turned back when we were climbing at night and it was quite demoralising. But I made it - mission accomplished with a great sense of achievement." Photos are available from:

Old Bredonian Nick Wilson is doing exceptionally well just 18 months into his engineering apprenticeship with Cunard. He was among the select group of cadets chosen to take part in the launch of the new ocean liner, Queen Victoria. Nineteen-year-old Nick, of Malvern, was a pupil at Bredon from the age of three until he was 18. For full details click here. |
