The Chairman Andy Root (1987-1994) The current Old Bredonians Chairman is Andy Root, aka Rooty. Andy has been on the OB committee since leaving school in the summer of 1994. He has served as team organiser, vice chairman and is currently in his second period of office as chairman. “From day one, my time at Bredon was full of many wild and wacky experiences,” he says. “My special achievement is that I not only managed to remain at the school after several visits to HM’s office for bad behaviour in the first two weeks, but that I eventually went on to become Head Boy. My duties as Head Boy included delivering a Founder’s Day speech in front of 1,000 people to share my time at the school, which I did whilst my head was spinning after a night of drink and destruction!” Success stories “There were a few other success stories, too, notably on the sports field, but even more importantly in the classroom, gaining qualifications I would not have achieved in a comprehensive school near my home in the suburbs of Birmingham.” These qualifications included a BTEC National Diploma in Leisure Studies, which Andy has since put to good use in his career. He is now Assistant Manager of a leisure centre in Birmingham. He remains as keen on sport as ever. “Working for Birmingham City Council gives me a fantastic opportunity to assist in national and international sports events.” In his spare time, Andy enjoys playing rugby for Birmingham Exiles RFC and watching England at Twickenham - “especially beating the Welsh and the Aussies!” Andy is a First Aid at Work trainer/assessor, a coach in both rugby and trampolining, and an RLSS Lifeguard trainer/Assessor. “My claim to fame is that I was captain of the Birmingham team who competed in the first-ever National Lifeguard Championships in 2005 and finished FIRST!” Andy has two aims for this year: to go to France for the 2007 Rugby World Cup and to set up his own first aid training company.
